Random Uptown & Chicago

These are various pictures I've taken with my phone. Low quality, uninspired, but its my life! :-)

Cold. Really Cold. And Dry.

Normally I'd consider the 30's and 40's cold. In December I decided that cold was actually in the teens and single digits. I withdraw that conclusion and instead definitively say that cold is somewhere between -1 and -20. (All temperatures herein specified are expressed in Fahrenheit measure.)

This morning our apartment was a little cooler than normal, in the 60's:

However, we frequently have a draft from the cabinets under the windows. As an experiment, Andy placed a milk jug with a probe thermometer in it overnight. The setup:

As you can see, the breeze from under the cabinet had cooled the water to about 34 degrees. This was 7:30 am so it may have been colder (frozen?) at some point prior. [I didn't notice that some sort of statement or other document was in view, so I deleted that content from the photo. It didn't appear to be of any true interest to shady characters, but we can never be too safe, right?]

Why did Andy and I do this, you might ask? Why wouldn't we? Honestly its just the sort of thing that geeky engineers find some small amount of joy in.

Spring semester = even more work than fall.

Georgia is one big prison?

I'm not hating on Atlanta, I promise. You may not be aware, but according to the Georgia Department of Corrections website, 1 in 15 Georgians is under "some form of correctional oversight." Maybe its just me, but that language comes off as almost proud. Kind of counter intuitive.

(Defeating) The Text Book Racket

The textbook monopoly in and of its self irritates me, but when you couple it with the premium placed on books by campus book stores it becomes downright infuriating. I purchased books earlier this week. Now I am going to return them because I found a slightly better deal. For your consideration:
